Examination Process – How it Works
At Rocky Mountain Veteran Evaluations, I provide a comprehensive mental health evaluation typically lasting about 90 minutes. Before we meet I will review any documents you provide. Our exam session will be a one-time meeting where I gather all relevant information from you. Following the meeting, I will prepare a detailed mental health report, addressing your symptoms, concerns, and appropriate DSM-5 diagnoses. This report will also focus on how these symptoms impact your daily functioning and will be specifically tailored to meet the requirements of the VA.

A step-by-Step description of the process:
Step 1: Contact Me
Use the contact form on this website to provide me with any questions you have. I will reach out to get some basic information about your military service, your goals for this evaluation, and to schedule an exam if you decide to move forward.
Step 2: Submit Paperwork
I will ask you to upload any relevant paperwork via a secure portal, such as:
DD214
VA disability decision letters
Documentation of mental health treatment
Statements from your spouse and/or military friends
Relevant personnel records
Any other documents that help in providing a comprehensive assessment of your mental health.
I will guide you through the process of gathering these documents.
Step 3: Attend Your Evaluation
90-Minute Virtual Meeting
After reviewing your paperwork, we will meet virtually for approximately 90 minutes. During this session, I will ask questions related to the following topics:
Pre-Military History: School, family, social life, etc. (as required by the VA)
Military History: Deployments, awards, physical injuries, stressors, and any mental health concerns that developed during service.
Post-Military History: Transition from the military, work/school history, and current mental health issues.
Legal and Substance Use History: While substance use problems aren’t directly service-connected by the VA, they can be secondary to other issues like PTSD.
Mental Health Impact: Discuss how symptoms affect your personal and professional life, including work, relationships, and day-to-day functioning.
Trauma History: A common question I receive is whether you’ll need to talk about traumatic events in detail. The answer is no, we will only discuss them in the necessary context for the evaluation unless you wish to go into more detail.
Step 4: Receive Your Report and Recommendations
Final Report:
Usually within 2-3 business days of your evaluation, I will provide a written report that summarizes your evaluation and is ready for submission to the VA as evidence for your claim.
Next Steps: If additional documentation is needed (e.g., statement from a spouse or treatment records), I will provide guidance.
Mental Health Treatment Information: I’ll also offer recommendations on potential mental health treatments best suited to your needs, although seeking treatment is entirely your decision.
